Improve Lives. Save the Planet.

Electrical and electronic engineering covers a wide range of general engineering principles and concepts. The branch tackles major global issues in: Transport , Energy, Healthcare, Telecommunications. This branch of engineering aims at Changing the world with revolutionary technology, improve people’s lives around the world and solve the planet’s energy needs. This program is a degree program that is industrially relevant, a well-paid and rewarding job when you graduate.

Electrical engineers are developing clean and efficient renewable energy and electric/hybrid vehicles to radically reduce our dependence on fossil fuel and to reduce our CO2 emissions.

Electrical and electronic engineering is revolutionizing mechanical and aerospace engineering with the introduction of smart electronics, modern control systems, electrical energy management and advanced communications. They are replacing our aging and inefficient power distribution systems with a revolutionary new Smart Grid.

For students who are interested in mathematics and science, electricity, energy and electronics, and want to design and invent things that benefit society, the best choice is electrical and electronic engineering degree.
There is a particularly strong cross-over with aspects of aeronautical and mechanical engineering. It is also a very creative subject and many of our graduates find employment in the digital media industry. The subject lies at the heart of the internet. Other specialist areas include the techniques to reduce our carbon footprint by developing renewable energy solutions, rolling out smart energy grids, and designing hybrid and all-electric vehicles; and investigating the latest quantum effects of electronics and their application in security and computing.

Various areas of study

Electrical and electronics engineering covers a broad range of study areas including renewable electrical power generation; smart distribution; urban, industrial, rural and regional power usage; the role of energy production and efficiency in climate change adaptation; control systems; and electronic device design.

Areas where our graduates enter include:

  • Research & development
  • Design & manufacture
  • Management and marketing
  • Consultancy
  • Education

Industry experience

As an engineering student you will have the opportunity to take part in industry-based work-integrated learning , internships and final-year industry-based projects. Industry experience is normally undertaken between semesters and enables you to acquire practical workplace skills and experience whilst developing valuable professional networks.

Career opportunities

Electrical and electronics engineering graduates can expect to gain employment in power generation and distribution, electronic design, factory control, local government, public works and consulting. 90 per cent of our graduates are in well-paid full-time employment. There is strong demand for graduating electrical and electronic engineers!

The techniques and skills acquired by them will help in pursuing research in diverse fields like biomedical, reliability, optimization, control and in multi disciplinary areas.

Energy is the life-blood for continual progress of human civilization. Energy processing equipment or power electronic equipment is a key element in the conversion of billions of kilowatts of electrical energy especially in the field of adjustable speed drives and renewable energy systems, contributing to remarkable energy saving and environmental pollution control in a broader perspective.

Power electronics technology has seen rapid progress in the past five decades, including power semi conductor devices, converters, drives, green surface and aerospace transport systems and renewable energy systems.
Power electronics is interdisciplinary in nature and used in a wide variety of industries from computers to chemical plants to rolling mills.

The importance of power electronics has grown tremendously over the years. Smart power devices are expected to become ubiquitous and revolutionize the way power is handled. In order to offer better quality of power, lot of research is on in areas such as power factor
correction and harmonic compensation.

Power electronics has now been established as a major discipline in electrical engineering and is gradually tending to emerge as a high tech frontier technology with power engineering. In the 21st century, it is expected that there will be a tremendous impact of power electronics not only in global industrialization and efficient energy systems, but also in energy conservation, renewable energy systems and electric or hybrid vehicles. The role of power electronics will be as important and versatile as computer and information technology today.
It is quite apparent that power electronics is emerging as the most preferred area of specialization and therefore quite worthwhile pursuing a master’s degree in power electronics.
